History

Pathanamthitta district has a population of 11.97 lakhs (Census 2011). The district has two district level hospitals and four taluk level hospitals providing regular services.. Earlier those who depend on public sector are themselves forced to travel out of the district to GMCH Kottayam or MCH Thiruvananthapuram in pursuit of specialist hospital care.

Both GMC Kottayam and MCH Trivandrum are approximately 100km from Pathanamthitta. The people who depend on public sector mainly depends on District Hospital Pathanamthitta which delivers most efficient treatment facilities. However, District Hospital Pathanamthitta is only a secondary care hospital. It is in this context that a tertiary care in government sector in Pathanamthitta assumed significance.

The famous Pilgrimage centre of Sabarimala is also situated in Pathanamthitta district. There are no high end public sector medical facilities to cater any medical urgency. Accordingly, during 2013, Government of Kerala decided to establish a Medical college at Konni for the people of Pathanamthitta district and thus the dreams of the public for a new Medical College with hospital budded in December 2013. The land was identified by the Government of Kerala at Anakuthy in Konni.
